Texture is something you can see and/or feel. Kindergarten rubbed color sticks over texture plates to create some visual texture in their monsters!

1st grade students kicked off painting this year through a collaborative process. To collaborate is to work together to make something; sometimes artists work individually, and sometimes they work as a team. As a table, students decided how to approach creating a large-scale mixed media piece. They used oil pastels and liquid watercolor to create an oil resist, a technique tying back to Kindergarten bird paintings.
The 1st grade students did such a great job of working together and trying new things. Some students each worked on their own area of the paintings, while other tables moved around the paper and added onto one another's layers. It was their choice as a team, and the conversations were very lively and involved. I am proud of the students' experimentation, and they are already on to another challenge: individual still-life painting! As you likely noticed, Mrs. Tetrault took off from April until the beginning of the 2016-17 school year for a maternity leave. Her son Isaac joined big sister Simone, age 2.
Mrs. Tetrault is excited to be back and has lots of fun art experiences planned for the new school year! Thank you to all my students for such a warm welcome back! The annual Hansen Art Showcase was a real success, showcasing artwork from students K-5 and live musical performances from grades 4 and 5. Students worked hard this year!
3rd grade students first drew intricate zentangle designs before painting a monochromatic value scale background.

First, they designed paper by experimenting with a variety of materials such as paint, salt, and oil pastel. Next they collaged a background, vase, and flowers. Each bouquet is as unique as the student artist!
Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students created mixed media collages. First, they designed paper by experimenting with a variety of materials such as paint, salt, and oil pastel. Next, hey traced their hands and cut them out. Finally, they collaged their hands and a bouquet of flowers using their designed paper. So much color!
As part of a larger color unit, 5th grade students learned about tints (hue plus white) and shade (hue plus black) and created monochromatic landscape paintings.
