Did you know you can create an atmospheric perspective by just adding white and black to a single color? Students created tints (+ white) and shades (+ black) of a single hue and painted wonderful monochromatic landscapes.

5th grade students kicked off painting with a collaborative approach. First, they watched a video of contemporary artist Hiep Nguyen's process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CztJdZZl7Xs
Next, they work together as a table to start collaborative paintings using circles. After several minutes, each group rotated to the next table. This continued until every student in the class put their own mark on every paintings. Each piece was as unique as the students working on it! Mrs. DeMayo's class looked at the artist Paul Klee's painting Castle and Sun before creating an abstracted castle of their own. They "built" these castles out of geometric shapes: circles, squares, rectangles, diamonds, etc. before adding vibrant color like Klee himself did! image source: http://totallyhistory.com/
1st grade students kicked off painting this year through a collaborative process. To collaborate is to work together to make something; sometimes artists work individually, and sometimes they work as a team. As a table, students decided how to approach creating a large-scale mixed media piece. They used oil pastels and liquid watercolor to create an oil resist, a technique tying back to Kindergarten bird paintings.
The 1st grade students did such a great job of working together and trying new things. Some students each worked on their own area of the paintings, while other tables moved around the paper and added onto one another's layers. It was their choice as a team, and the conversations were very lively and involved. I am proud of the students' experimentation, and they are already on to another challenge: individual still-life painting! As you likely noticed, Mrs. Tetrault took off from April until the beginning of the 2016-17 school year for a maternity leave. Her son Isaac joined big sister Simone, age 2.
Mrs. Tetrault is excited to be back and has lots of fun art experiences planned for the new school year! Thank you to all my students for such a warm welcome back! 3rd and 5th grade students learned about NYC artist Keith Haring before creating these life-sized collaborative paintings. First, they traced a classmate in a pose of motion before painting a vibrant color and adding rhythmic lines.
As part of a self-portrait unit, 2nd grade students in Mrs. DeMayo's class collaged self portraits by first drawing from observation and then adding key details in cut paper.
